IS THERE AND EAR SURGERY ALTERNATIVE?

Cosmetic ear procedures such as pinning and earlobe repair are relatively quick but certainly very delicate. The main concern to achieve the best split earlobe repair results is the achievement of symmetry between the ears. WHAT TO EXPECT BEFORE EARLOBE REPAIR SURGERY?

As your surgery approaches it is likely that you will be asked to make some small changes and in particular to avoid certain activities and medications.

This may include:

• Taking medical tests including blood tests
• Stopping smoking
• Adjusting or taking certain medications
• Avoiding aspirin, herbal supplements and anti-inflammatory drugs
• Refraining from drinking alcohol
• Avoiding sun overexposure, particular to the ear area
• Committing not to make stringent changes to your diet

If you choose to undergo a general anaesthetic you will need to follow fasting instructions.

THE EARLOBE SURGERY PROCEDURE

• Earlobe surgery usually takes under an hour depending on the extent of the correction
• Earlobe repair is normally performed under local anaesthetic
• Your surgeon will rebuild your earlobe, giving it as natural an appearance as possible
• Fine sutures are used to support healing skin and minimise scarring

AFTER YOUR EAR SURGERY

In the days following your surgery your earlobes are likely to ache and be tender.

After that:

• You may experience a little numbness, this should settle within a few weeks
• You will need to wear a supportive bandage for around 2-4 week
• You should avoid vigorous exercise, heavy lifting and hot and spicy foods for around a week after surgery
• Most of the swelling and bruising will subside within 7-14 days
•  The sutures are usually self-dissolving so there is no need to struggle after your surgery
• You should avoid steam baths, saunas and sunbathing for several weeks
• You will need to avoid activities that may result in your ear being bent
• Your scars will take time to heal, they may appear to get worse in the first few months then settle and then flatten and fade after around 6 months
