Can a breast lift with implants look natural?
Yes. A breast lift combined with an implant (augmentation-mastopexy) can look very natural when it is properly planned. The lift restores the breast’s shape and position by removing excess skin and raising the nipple, while the implant restores fullness, particularly in the upper breast. The key to a natural result is choosing an implant size and profile suited to your frame and tissues, rather than over-sizing, and balancing the lift and volume to your proportions. In my practice, I also use techniques such as an “internal bra” to support the lower pole and, in selected cases, fat transfer to soften and refine the result. A natural outcome is the rule, not the exception, when the planning is right.
What Is a Breast Lift (Mastopexy)?
A breast lift raises and reshapes sagging breasts, restoring a firmer, more youthful appearance. It involves removing excess, stretched skin, reshaping the underlying tissue, suspending the entire glandular unit higher up to the pectoralis muscle, and repositioning the nipple and areola to a more central, youthful height. This lift changes the shape and position of the breast rather than its size. Where fullness has also been lost, an implant or fat transfer can be added to restore volume.

What Causes Breasts to Sag?
Breast drooping, known clinically as ptosis, is extremely common and has several causes. Pregnancy and breastfeeding stretch the skin and tissues. Weight fluctuations have a similar effect. With age, the skin loses elasticity, the supporting structures weaken, and gravity does the rest. Genetics also plays a part in skin quality and breast shape. Because the breast itself contains no muscle, exercise cannot lift it; therefore, a surgical lift is the only way to reposition a breast that has genuinely dropped.
In very few cases, when the breast is particularly small, a lift can be achieved by augmentation alone using an implant, fat injection or a combination of the two.
Can a Breast Lift With Implants Look Natural?
This is the question at the heart of most consultations, and the honest answer is yes, provided the planning is right. A lift on its own repositions the breast but might not add enough fullness, particularly in the upper pole. For patients who have lost volume as well as position, often after pregnancy or weight loss, combining the lift with an implant (augmentation-mastopexy) restores both.
A natural result depends on a few principles I hold to. The implant should be sized to your frame and your tissues, not to a number; over-sizing is the most common reason a result looks artificial. Oversizing could also cause complications such as wound dehiscence with implant exposure and infection. The choice between a round and an anatomical implant depends on your shape, and in my clinic, I offer both silicone and polyurethane implants.
The lift and the volume must be balanced together so the breast looks proportionate rather than ‘done’. Some patients are looking for a more artificial look, and I sometimes suggest seeking advice from another colleague. My aim is always a result that looks like a refreshed version of you, not an obviously operated breast.
The Options I Offer
A breast lift can be performed on its own or combined with one or more of the following, depending on what your breasts need:
- Silicone implants (augmentation-mastopexy), either round or anatomical, to restore or increase fullness.
- Polyurethane implants: this approach is recommended to avoid problems such as rotation and capsular contraction. While these advantages are extremely convenient in breast plastic surgery, the use of polyurethane requires extensive experience, as this material has unique technical features.
- An internal bra: a dissolving mesh used to support the lower pole of the breast, which can give a longer-lasting result.
- Fat injection: transferring your own fat to soften and refine the result. I published my first 50 cases of fat injection to the breast in the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery journal in 2008.
- Any combination of the above, tailored to your anatomy and goals.
At your consultation, I assess your breast anatomy, skin quality, and goals and recommend the technique or combination most likely to give you a natural, lasting result.
What About Scars?
A breast lift does involve scars, because skin must be removed to lift the breast. Depending on the degree of lift, the scars are placed around the areola, vertically down from the areola, and sometimes within the breast crease. I plan incisions for discretion and close them carefully in layers to support a lasting result with minimal tension on the skin. Scars are usually pink at first and fade considerably over the following months. I also offer laser treatment to improve their appearance further.
What Should I Expect Before, During and After Surgery?
Before surgery
A thorough consultation is the foundation of a good outcome. I take a full medical history, examine and “measure at least twice” the breast dimensions, discuss the options honestly, and explain the technique I recommend and why. Patients are asked to stop smoking well before surgery (ideally 2-4 weeks and continue 6 weeks after surgery) and to avoid anti-inflammatory medicines and alcohol in the days beforehand, as these increase the risk of bruising and bleeding.
The procedure
A breast lift is usually performed under deep sedation or TIVA (total intravenous anaesthesia). It typically takes around two to three hours, depending on the degree of lift and whether an implant, internal bra, or fat transfer is included. I perform all procedures personally with the assistance of my team.
Recovery
Many patients go home the same day or after one night. You will wear a supportive surgical bra to support the breasts and reduce swelling. Most patients return to work within two weeks. Swelling then settles, and the final results are typically seen around six to eight weeks, as the tissues relax and the breasts settle into their new shape. I provide detailed aftercare and follow-up throughout your recovery.
What Are the Risks?
In experienced hands, a breast lift is a safe and well-established operation, but as with any surgery, there are risks, and I discuss them fully at the consultation. These include scarring, temporary or, less commonly, lasting changes in nipple or skin sensation, some asymmetry, and healing issues, which are more likely in smokers. Where an implant is used, there are implant-specific considerations, such as capsular contracture and the fact that implants are not lifetime devices and may need attention in the future. Careful planning and technique minimise these risks, and an honest discussion of them is part of every consultation.
How Much Does a Breast Lift Cost in the UK?
Cost is the question I am asked about most, so it is worth being clear. The cost of a breast lift in the UK varies depending on what your breasts need. A lift on its own is at the lower end. Adding an implant (augmentation-mastopexy), an internal bra, or fat transfer increases the cost, as does the complexity of the lift and the type of anaesthetic and facility used. Anatomica (teardrop) implants are more expensive than round ones. Polyurethane is more expensive than silicone. There is therefore no single price, and any figure you see online should be treated as a guide only.
What I would say is this: the right operation for you is worth more than the lowest quote, and very low prices, particularly for surgery abroad, can carry real costs in terms of safety, aftercare, and revision if something goes wrong. At your consultation, I give a clear, personalised quote that includes the surgery, anaesthetic, facility and aftercare, with no hidden extras, so you know exactly what you are paying for.
Can You Lift Sagging Breasts Without Surgery?
Many people look for a way to lift sagging breasts naturally, with exercise, creams or tape. It is worth being honest here: because the breast contains no muscle, no exercise can lift the breast itself, and creams cannot tighten stretched skin. Supportive taping or a well-fitting bra can temporarily improve appearance, but they do not change the breast. For a genuine, lasting lift, surgery is the only option, which is why an honest assessment of what you hope to achieve is the right starting point.

How much does a breast lift cost in the UK?
It varies depending on your treatment plan. A lift on its own is at the lower end; adding implants, an internal bra, or fat transfer increases the cost, as does the lift’s complexity. I give a clear, personalised quote at consultation that includes surgery, anaesthetic, facility and aftercare. Be cautious of unusually low prices, particularly abroad, where aftercare and revision can become costly.
How much is a breast lift with implants compared to one without?
A breast lift with implants (augmentation-mastopexy) costs more than a lift alone because it involves the implant and the additional surgery to place it. Which is right for you depends on whether you have lost fullness as well as position. I will outline both options and their costs during your consultation.
Will the results look natural?
Yes. I specialise in natural, proportionate results tailored to each patient’s body. A natural look comes from sizing any implant to your frame, choosing the right implant shape, and balancing the lift with the volume, rather than over-sizing.
Can you have a breast lift without implants?
Yes. A breast lift on its own removes excess skin and reshapes and raises the breast without changing its size. Implants are only added if you also want to restore or increase fullness, particularly in the upper breast. Many patients have a lift with no implant at all.
How is a breast lift performed?
Excess, stretched skin is removed, the breast tissue is reshaped and lifted, and the nipple and areola are repositioned to a more youthful height. The incision pattern depends on the degree of lift. It is usually done under general anaesthetic and takes around two to three hours.
How long does a breast lift last?
The results are long-lasting, but ageing, gravity and any future pregnancies or significant weight changes continue over time. A stable weight, a supportive bra and a healthy lifestyle help maintain the result. Where implants are used, they may need attention in the future, as implants are not lifetime devices.
Is a breast lift painful?
Most patients describe discomfort and tightness rather than pain, which is well controlled with prescribed pain relief and eases over the first week. A supportive bra helps. A lift combined with implants placed under the muscle can feel a little more uncomfortable at first, but this too settles quickly.
When can I lift my arms, lift weights or sleep on my side after a breast lift?
Gentle arm movement is encouraged early, but you should avoid raising your arms fully “over the shoulders” and any heavy lifting or upper-body exercise for around four to six weeks. I usually advise sleeping on your back, with your upper body slightly elevated, for the first few weeks rather than on your side or front. I will give you a clear, personalised activity timeline at your follow-up.
Can you breastfeed after a breast lift?
Many women can breastfeed after a breast lift, but it cannot be guaranteed, as the surgery involves the breast tissue and sometimes the area around the nipple. If you are planning further pregnancies, it is often worth discussing timing, as pregnancy can also affect your results. I will talk this through with you at the consultation.
Does a breast lift leave scars, and do they fade?
There are permanent scars because skin must be removed to lift the breast. They are placed around the areola, vertically down, and sometimes in the breast crease, depending on the lift. They are pink at first and fade considerably over the following months; I offer laser treatment to improve their appearance further.
What is a ‘vampire breast lift’, and does it work?
A vampire breast lift is a non-surgical injectable treatment (using platelet-rich plasma) and is a completely different thing from a surgical breast lift. It does not lift or reshape a sagging breast. If your concern is genuine drooping, only a surgical mastopexy will address it.
Can I combine a breast lift with implants, fat transfer or an internal bra?
Yes. A lift can be combined with silicone implants (round or anatomical), fat injection to refine the result, and an internal bra to support the lower pole for a longer-lasting result, in any appropriate combination.
How long is the recovery?
Most patients return to work within one to two weeks. Final results are usually seen around six to eight weeks, once swelling subsides, and the breasts settle. Heavy upper-body activity should be avoided for around four to six weeks.
